An incredibly rare penguin was photographed on South Georgia Island. The all-black bird is a melanistic king penguin, Aptenodytes patagonicus, and could mark the first time this particular individual has ever been photographed.
“I don’t believe anyone has seen this all black penguin before,” said photographer Yves Adams from Belgium. “The season has only just started on South Georgia, we were only the third boat to land there.”
“It’s one out of a colony of hundreds of thousands of penguins that has this colour morph.”
