Met Gala 2026: Where Fashion Becomes Art. And Sparks Debate

Every year, on the first Monday of May, the steps of New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art transform into the most photographed staircase in the world. Tonight, May 4, 2026, the Met Gala returns and this year, the theme asks a bold question: where does fashion end and art begin?

The Theme: "Fashion Is Art"

This year's dress code, "Fashion Is Art," is inspired by the Costume Institute's spring exhibition "Costume Art." Guests have been invited to express their own relationship to fashion as an embodied art form and celebrate the countless depictions of the dressed body throughout art history. It is one of the most open-ended and creatively challenging themes in recent memory which means the red carpet tonight promises to be one for the books.

The Co-Chairs

The 2026 Met Gala is co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. Each name carries significant cultural weight. Beyoncé's return to the Met steps is one of the most anticipated moments of the evening, while Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams bring Hollywood glamour and athletic power respectively to a night that celebrates fashion as a living art form.

The Host Committee

The Met Gala host committee is chaired by Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz, and includes names such as Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Gwendoline Christie, Misty Copeland, Lisa, Sam Smith, and Teyana Taylor, among others a diverse, global lineup that reflects the broad reach of fashion as a cultural language.

The Controversy

Not everything about tonight's event is purely celebratory. The 2026 Met Gala has faced criticism, bad press, and even calls for a boycott, following the announcement that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos would serve as lead sponsors and honorary co-chairs of the event. For many, the presence of one of the world's wealthiest figures at fashion's most exclusive fundraiser raises uncomfortable questions about access, inequality, and the direction of cultural philanthropy.

How to Watch

Red carpet coverage begins at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT, with the official Vogue Met Gala livestream available for free on YouTube. The livestream will be hosted by Ashley Graham, La La Anthony, and Cara Delevingne, with Emma Chamberlain returning as Vogue's red carpet correspondent. E! will also broadcast live coverage, streaming on Peacock.

The Met Gala is more than a celebrity party  it is an annual cultural moment that reflects where fashion, art, and society intersect. This year's theme invites designers and celebrities alike to blur the line between garment and artwork, between the body and the canvas. Whether tonight's looks rise to that challenge or fall short of it, one thing is certain: the world will be watching.
